Simple Concept

If this doesn’t bring a smile to your face I don’t know what will. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that pull at our heart.

And if we can pull this off, in this many countries (mine included–see the Bahamas at time mark 3:19), at the same time across the world, why can’t we just do a little more to help each other?

Some small gestures….

  • smile (really smile) and say hello to a perfect stranger on the street today,
  • complement someone on their attire today,
  • write a love note to someone you love and stick it in their pocket to find later today,
  • pay for the coffee of the next person in line today,
  • say sorry today,
  • let someone else win for a change today,
  • spend time with your kid(s) — call them, play a game, c’mon you can think of something today,
  • smile and hold the door open for somebody today,
  • be pleasant to the person over the counter today
  • give yourself a hug today.

ALL WE NEED IS LOVE.

p.s. the video above is a project by Starbucks to raise money for medicine for those living with HIV in Africa. They celebrated the generous donations of many by organizing a worldwide, all-at-the-same-time singing event…..ONE SONG, ONE WISH, 156 COUNTRIES. Lend your voice to the effort by going here.

Through Their Own Words

For my recent zine, The Inner Eye I had to include an interview. Since my zine is an inspirational art zine I, of course,\’a0 chose to interview an artist.
\

\
The only thing with that was that after I came up with the questions I was nosy enough to want to know how other artists would answer these same questions.
\

\
So I came up with a plan and chose to pose the questions to a few artist friends and include all their answers in the zine. Over the next few weeks I will post some of the answers from these individual artists. Since yesterday’s post was about Nancy, I’ll start there.

Meet Nancy Cook

I’ve known Nancy for a few years and was invited by her this year to join Fiberart Options, a fiber art group. In the last few months I have gotten a better chance to get to know her.
\

\
She is a wonderfully warm, engaging and inspirational artist, who is always willing to answer any questions we might have about our art in order to help us succeed. And…she loves to laugh, which is always good for the soul.
\

\
Her recent work is very much nature inspired. She paints her beautiful art pieces with Tsukineko inks on sumptuous hand dyed fabrics, then expertly enhances them with her quilting stitches.
\

\

Enjoy this insightful look into a wonderful artist, Nancy Cook…

Inner Eye: What informs your artwork?
\
Nancy Cook: My work is informed by the traditions of botanical illustrations and quilting mediums.
\

\
IE: Why fabric/thread/paint as a means of expression?
\
NC: I love the textures that result from the quilted line, it is a way that I connect with my past and women from many cultures and across time.
\

\
IE: Who continually inspires you?
\
NC: Women artists, especially fiber artists, women politicians and role models like Oprah Winfrey.
\

\
IE: What, if anything, precedes the full blow idea for a piece of art?
\
NC: Sometimes I wake up with an idea that is pretty close to full blown and that is a gift from the gods or muse.\’a0 Other times it is looking, really looking, at a tree seed specimen.\’a0 It takes time, perhaps a magnifying glass and, often, sketching the piece multiple times, before the full blown idea emerges.
\

\
IE: What matters most to you about the work that you do?
\
NC: That it satisfies me in terms of concept realized, quality of the production.
\

\
IE: What do you ask of yourself in terms of your art in the next 5 yrs?
\
NC: Have sufficient recognition that it will not be rapidly consigned to a garage sale upon my death.
\

\
This last question I thought was the best answer an artist can give…
\

\
IE: If you could not pursue your art, what other way would you spend your time?
\
NC: I haven’t the slightest idea.
\

\
I loved her answer especially because I believe that in in order to produce the best art we can, whatever medium we choose, our art should consume our souls. Nancy’s answer (to me) shows exactly this. You can find Nancy’s work on her website and more about her on her blog.

Hold that Take Down….

"Be" the water fairy

BE, the Water Fairy, 18″ tall
Doll Challenge

Funny incident happened when we went to take down our Art of Cloth” show this past Thurs.

I had just taken one piece down when a few ladies came wondering in apologizing and begging us to not take down the show till they had a chance to walked it.

Apparently they got the date wrong for viewing. So the five of us stood back and the 3 ladies had the place to themselves. They stayed for about 45 minutes, really studying pieces, talking amongst themselves and asking each of us questions about certain pieces.

We let them take as much time as they needed. They were very pleased and congratulated us on a “fine show”.

Now how cool is that?

Not been selling on etsy for any long length of time and still have to find out about all the thrills, extras and things to do there. Seems like I’m missing out on stuff…sniff sniff.

Maybe I need to schedule in some me time to play .

The Reveal….

Well now is the time to reveal of the winner of the “Guess My Swap Technique” I’m doing for the Arttechniques yahoo group.

drum roll pls……..

…IT IS A BROWN PAPER BAG distressed only with paints and silver ink.  I was going for an antiqued silver metal look and thanks to all the comments I received I think I got fairly close to my objective.  I must have crumpled that darned paper bag at least 5 or 6 times after each drying session because I really wanted lots of texture on it. I really like it!

arttechnique

The other one I did looks like bronzed metal (below). At first I was aiming for a leather-like look but eh….that sure didn’t work out. So I ended up rubbing more and more of the copper ink on it and loved the effect. The picture does not do it justice though, if only you could see this in person…and some of you lucky folks will get to once we swap next year.

arttechnique-23

So back to who won. Since no guessed exactly the right technique but everyone seemed to be in the same  ballpark I put everyone’s name in the running and used the random number generator to pick a winner. And the winner is…….

…..Anne Marie Desaulniers

Anne Marie,  email me (see sidebar) and let me know your snail mail address so I can send your surprise gift on over to you. Congratulations and thanks for playing along everyone.

Now I’m off to make 122 little 4″x4″ cards. Whew! I’m tired already just thinking about it. Ha!

And the Winners of the Dyed Fabrics Are….

I’m So Excited!!!!!

Thanks to all of you for leaving a comment on my Dyed Fabrics blog post. I loved what each of you wrote and can’t wait to get your little pieces of colour heaven on its way to you.

As I mentioned before I used a random number generator (RNG) to pick the 7 winners of my first dyed fabric give-away.

Each of you were assigned a number and to make it easy I just used the chronilogical order in which you posted, Joyce would be #1; Karoda -#2; Karrin -#3 and so on. Plugging the numbers into the RNG it scrambled your numbers and spit out a list which is (drum roll please)…………………….

2 – 3 – 9 – 6 – 7 – 10 – 1 – 5 -4 -8.

The 7 winners are Karoda, Karrin, freebird, Karen, Judy, Yetunde and Joyce. Congratulations to all and look for me to have more give aways when I dye more fabrics. (y’all don’t know how hooked I am on this now…oh boy, there goes the budget).

(Unfortunately because I got a comment from “Anonymous” I could not put you in the running because I have no way to get in contact with you. Sorry bout that).

I won’t tell you which fabric you won because I want it to be a surprise when you get in in the mail so get cracking and email me your mailing address now (see sidebar for my email addy).

Please email me a pic of whatever you decided to make with your winning fat quarter of fabric. I’d love to see them and post them here.

See ya next time “In the Hayloft”,

p.s. don’t know if you know but I gave each fab a name, click on the individual fabrics in this post and hover over the enlarged pic to find them out.

Listen to the Whispers

I am truly grateful for what I have and am thankful for the things I have accomplished so far in my life. My prayers are mostly of gratitude rather than requests, my one main request being strength…strength to get thru whatever struggle I might be going thru at the moment.

Oprah’s new show, “The Big Give” is a must for me and invariably I end up in tears because someone in need is rewarded with a Big Give and it’s usually a powerful experience. The premise of this show is based on the thought that prompted me to do a Pay It Forward post a while back…giving for giving sake only, with nothing expected in return.

Tonight as I sat and watched the Oprah Show (recorded) with Oprah interviewing the latest contestant to leave the show, Rachael Hollingworth, I was perplexed.

To recap, Rachael and the other three Big Givers were to make dying wishes come true for two people. One of them, Miss Emily’s wish, was to play at Carnegie Hall. Miss Emily is on permanent oxygen and sits in a wheeelchair most of the time but from the time she was a little girl had seen herself on stage at Carnegie Hall.

Racheal, who could only see things in terms of herself finnagled her way into doing a solo performance at this dying woman’s big event. I was truly upset that she would take some of the limelight away from Miss Emily. She did not see the big picture!

She did not see that she was taking away some of the beauty of the Carnegie Hall moment that belonged solely to Miss Emily. She did not hear the whisper that kept telling her that this moment was not about her. She missed all the cues until Oprah sat her down and explained that she was only the vessel in this life event, not the event itself. She was looking out into the ocean to catch the big waves but missed the ones lapping gently at her feet.

Yes, she will always be able to brag that she sang at Carnegie Hall, but in the sunset of her life she’ll always have the knowledge that she encroached on someone else’s moment…that it really was not her time. She’ll have to come to terms with the fact that she just didn’t listen to the whispers…this time.

Listen to your whispers.

Pay It Forward or Spreading the Love

I’ve been noticing something lately, we humans seem to be on the wrong track, too many selfish acts and not very many selfless actions.

Thoughts and deeds that help others, rather than fill our own tanks all the time, needs to be the order of the day on a more regular basis.

I realise that the only way to make the world a better place is to start with ME and to do something small for someone else. One way I can do that is to use my creative talents to bring a smile to someone else’s world. My life is always spinning with blessings of all sorts (no matter the down times) and so in that vein I propose an offer to you.

Gift Giving

I will send a little creative gift to the first 5 people who leave a comment on my blog requesting to join this Pay It Forward gift exchange. I don’t know what that gift will be yet but you’ll be getting a little ray of sunshine coming to your post box soon, that’s my promise!

The only thing you have to do in return is to pay it forward by making the same promise on your blog. Once you leave your comment, copy and paste the above paragraph on your blog and 5 lucky people will be recipients of your creative work.

While you are doing this small exchange, think of how you can do more to pay it forward and help someone in your community or someone across the world who could definitely use a bit of kindness or your help in standing tall once again.

Let’s all Pay it Forward!

See ya next time “In the Hayloft”,

p.s. don’t forget to leave me your email so we can communicate offline.
