my boy :: the man

i have longed for him to succeed, to excel, to become his own true person and, revel in that truth.

last weekend i caught a true glimpse of his transformation and it warmed the cuckolds of my heart like you wouldn’t believe.

i can finally breath and watch him bloom.

last thursday we got up early {uggh..6 am} to watch the airmen’s run. he ran by in flight formation……and i missed him. I was so excited and thought i had set the camera up correctly to get an action shot but was crying to much too see.  everyone else saw him and was shouting…’there he is, there he is’… .and for the life of me i didn’t see him.

days later as i rifled thru the 20 or so pics (i just kept clicking the camera button as they all ran by)  i saw i that i did get a shot…bit blurry yes, but i got a shot.

hours later we are sitting in bleachers {freezing our butts off} waiting for the new airmen to march in for the coin ceremony {i’ll post again about the significance of the airman coin, it’s a fascinating story}. In they march looking fine in their ‘blues’.

we were all cheering and shouting as his flight came in.  omg! he’s a handsome dude even if i say it myself.

when we actually got permission to greet them and hug them my niece took the camera from me…said she needed to capture the moment.

None of us had seen him for  2 months and here he was….finally.

i saw him, hugged him but just couldn’t get over it, remembering who we sent off to basic, this boy we’ve struggled with through the years and seeing this young man, all grown up, standing tall and in charge, in front of me.  i kept touching his face, looking up at him and crying all over again.

that sneaky niece of mine took quite a few pics of me blubbering on like this but i won’t subject you to all of them.  it was a fairly long scene to say the least. Ha!

So we’re standing there talking and laughing and joking and my mother, her head wrapped in a scarf cause the wind was so bitingly cold on her ears, asks him a question and he answers with a ‘yes ma’am’.

I have never seen my mother do this before but the woman just swooned into his arms. it’s not that he wasn’t ever respectful when speaking to her but the way he spoke, with that “military bearing’ he presented, just melted my mother’s heart and……she swooned.

no other word for it.

of course the niece captured the play by play moments again, but this was the best shot by far.

we got to hang with him on base the rest of the day.  he showed us around everywhere.  Lackland AFB is a large expanse of area, the largest of all the training bases in the US.   in one of the letters he wrote to us he said there were a few things that he was missing…

…being able to put his hands in his pockets

…a nice juicy steak

…and something sweet
{that boy man has a sweet tooth like you wouldn’t believe!!!}.

so we headed out to eat lunch and buy him a large vanilla milkshake that he savored till the absolute last drop. it was hard leaving him again but i knew we’d be back the next day for graduation.

a painting

rummaging thru the studio {trying in vain to find something else of course} i came across a painting i’d done earlier this year.

i propped it up for a few days then, as it seemed to be calling to me again, i took a paintbrush  to it, tweaking it here and there. I didn’t start over, it just seemed to be needing something more.

i remembered afterwards that i’d made a video of it so here goes.  for some reason, at the end. it just stops.   i have no clue why or if there’s more.  i’ll have to dig thru more of my files to see where the other part is. until then…enjoy watching my process.

first click here and try to do exactly as they ask.
when you finish, hit your back button

go ahead.  i’ll wait for you…….

good…you’re back

did you last the whole two minutes without looking up or getting distracted?

Woohoo!

and if you did…

did you allow the nothingness of your mind take over so that all thoughts receded?

did you sit still in your own mind space?

could you visualize the waves as they rolled in over the sand right onto your feet?

did you feel your heart open wide as you inhaled and exhaled each breath?

were you able to give yourself the gift of 2 minutes?

I hope you did.

my gift to you today

my cReaTiVe moJo

i need to reveal something….for the last year or so i’ve been struggling to create with fabric.

from what i understand, after much coaxing on my part for her to come back out, my art quilt muse decided to take an indefinite break (of course she didn’t let me know this before she just up and left!).

so earlier this year, instead of looking at all my fabrics and feeling the guilts for not creating with them or fondling them so lovingly (yes you all know bout that….i’m not the only one who’s had a long time love affair with her fabs), i rearranged my studio and put all the fabrics AND my beloved bernina away.

SHOCK!   HORROR!

yes i really did.

and the relief was palatable.   immediate.   freeing.

my hands were still itching to create so i began playing with paper

and painting

and discovering

where she (this muse who definitely has a mind of her own!) needed to go next in her creativity.

for the last few months, altho i was keeping to myself, i still went into the studio to play.

i know it’s early days yet for this new work but i’m having fun.
the days of avoiding my studio and the constant search for my creative mojo seem to be over.

here’s a peek at where my inspiration has been taking me

don’t where this is all leading but ideas have been stirring
and this girl is excited!
wish me luck.

toodles all,

G

p.s. i usually upload videos to youtube but have decided to try out vimeo (check out my other vids here).

btw…am looking for some feedback. if you create videos and use one of these 2 video services over the other, drop me an email let me know why you prefer the one you use.
What frustrates you and what can’t you live without that it provides? Thanks for you help!

treasure hunting….on esty?

i found a little gift in my mailbox a little while back

an email informing me that i (or rather, one of my products) was included in an esty treasury.

butterfly kiss Lil purse

i love being included in treasuries.  it’s so much fun to see what the list is about and who else has been included.

esty came up with the idea of treasure hunts whereby an esty member gathers together a list of 16 sellers according to whatever criteria they choose.  it can be all about favorite items, a cool colour, a theme or  even a personal wish list, the sky’s the limit on what it can include.

enchanted with yarn‘ put together an etsy treasure hunt with a selection of Huntersville artists/craftspeople and i was included…yay me!  she says she’s a newbie at etsy but a long timer at creating and sharing her creations.

i realized recently that these lazy days of summer are the last all of my kids and i will spend together living under the same roof
(barring any emergency “mummy help me puh-leeze” phone calls).

one of them, #1 child, will be off on his own life adventure (basic training) come september and it’ll be only a short while before #2 child heads back to college for her next phase in life.   that leaves one more left to make the house feel lived in.

i’ve been looking through photographs old and new of late and reminiscing, not believing how much they have grown and changed, remembering each one’s entry into my life.  what are journey!  guess it’s time now to really test those wings and the pull of my heart.

here’s who makes me smile each day..

what makes you smile?

who fills YOUR heartspace?

My girl…she’s all grown up now.

Yesterday she left for a trip to England…her first time on a flight by herself….AND it’s across the Atlantic.

Yup…she’s putting another step into the adult pool.

Sigh…..

royal entertainment

yes, I watched the royal wedding this morning…had to wake up at that time anyway to get cman on the bus.

my experience this time is somewhat different than the absolute fluttering i remember experiencing watching princess diana’s wedding all those years ago.

first, i was single then and any fairytale wedding would have appealed to me probably yearning for my own.  2ndly, this time i am almost 20 years married with 3 kids so i didn’t as willingly step into the magic of the day.

my magic was receiving the flowers above from the hubby.  not a big fan of flowers (still prefer photographing them to keeping a fresh vase of them) but darn it, once in every blue moon he surprises me with some. That’s my magic.

Enjoy the lovelies!

Easter 2011

hope everyone enjoyed their Easter Celebration!

today, before prepping dinner, we headed out for a drive.  after all the bank and forth weather we’ve been having it was wonderful waking up to a beautiful easter sunday morn.

in fact as we were eating breakfast we noticed outside the window, on the green across from the house, a family with their young son flying a kite. magical indeed!

only last night my neighbor, originally from Guyana, told me that on easter sunday, Guyanese from all over, to celebrate the risen Christ, fly kites…the skies are chock full of them.  had never heard of that tradition before and it just so happens that we see a kite flying this morn.

anyway…i’ve been working on a new thing. youtube has issued a challenge that members vlog (video blog) every day for the month of april (got this from Tam over at willowing.ning.com).  so i decided to chime in on this.  with only nine days left in the month it seems an easy feat.

so go go check out my youtube channel and see what’s up. it’s weird being in front of the camera but i kinda like it….it’s not as hard as i thought it would be….much like talking to you guys thru this blog.

wish me luck with keeping up with it.

toodles,

p.s. on our drive we ended up at university of nc at charlotte’s botanical gardens where I proceeded to take lots of pics..the orchid above was one of them…gor-gee-ous!
