I was invited to make a work of art for the Deltas of Charlotte’s 5th Annual Benefit Auction.

The Deltas of Charlotte are part of the national organization, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority that was started by 22 college students at Howard University in 1913.

These twenty-two black women felt a need to “use their collective strengths to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need“.  One of the first things they took part in was the Women’s Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. in March, 1913.

A few of the more notable members of this sorority are Shirley Chisholm, the first black female member of Congress, Ruby Dee, the phenomenal Broadway and film actress, Tina Allen, sculptor, painter and winner of the Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award,  Brigader General Hazel J. Brown, the first African-American woman general in the U.S. Army and Osceola Macarthy Adams, noted Broadway actress and, more importantly, one of the founding members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Remi Adeniji, thecordinator for the auction, wanted to add a new feature to this year’s event and decided to invite a few local artists to donate works for the silent auction.

With the mission of the Sorority in mind I created a piece I call  “It Takes A Village”.

It’s not finished yet, I have yet to quilt it, but……the top is done.

As many of you know I love to play with fused shapes and I so loved the simplicity of the shapes that portray the people in this quilt. And I know you can’t help but notice the michievous kids lurking in the back……just like a normal family group.

To me this piece epitomizes the efforts of the founders….that in the end, we are all family and must do what we can for each other whenever we can.
